The birth of our aluminium plant. On March 31, 1914, ten entrepreneurs from Unna join forces and found the “Messingwerk Aktiengesellschaft”. This marks the beginning of a company tradition that goes back more than 100 years.
In 1915, one year after the company’s foundation, the construction of our factory halls begins. Production starts on October 1, 1915.
In 1935, the development and production of our customised semi-finished aluminium products takes off. Since then, we have enjoyed a close cooperation with our customers.
During the Second World War, Unna is hit by a severe bombing attack. Production at the Aluminiumwerk Unna is halted for some time.
May 1945 marks the end of the war. In the same month, our production at the Aluminiumwerk Unna is resumed under American occupation.
At the Annual General Meeting on January 24, 1969, the plant is given a new name. “Messingwerk” becomes “Messing und Leichtmetallwerk” (Brass and light metal plant). The reason is the increasing importance of the light metal department of the company.
The end of heavy metal production after more than 60 years: The production of copper and brass semi-finished products is discontinued. From this time on, our focus has been on the production of semi-finished aluminium products.
Majority shareholding of the AluTeam Group: On February 27, 1979, the company is renamed “Aluminiumwerk Unna AG”. This has remained our company name for over 40 years now.

In 2007, our aluminium plant delivers an outstanding performance. We celebrate our record year with sales of 90 million EUR.
On the occasion of our 95th anniversary, we take the opportunity to make an announcement. Over the next five years, the aluminium plant will invest 50 million Euros in the Unna site. Two new extrusion presses will be purchased and around 150 new employees hired in production.
We have launched a number of projects to reduce our energy consumption at the aluminium plant. For example, roofs are now produced cut-to-size. Heat treatment and quality testing also contribute to a better energy balance. In addition, a central compressed air station is being put into operation.
We are constantly working on the quality of our production. That is why we are looking forward to the inauguration of the innovative extrusion line. The new “35 MN direct / 40 MN indirect extrusion press P114” with run out table is state-of-the-art. The machine now complements our existing extrusion press facilities in the plant.
We want to make a difference. That is why protecting the climate is close to our heart. In an assessment, the certifying body TÜV Nord audits our plant in all areas. The outcome: We are presented with our first certificate for environmental and energy management.
Our commitment to reducing greenhouse gas emissions is rewarded. In 2014, the district of Unna awards us the climate protection flag. We are delighted about this recognition. For the sake of the environment, we will continue to work on this in the future. As a sign of this, the flag now flies over our aluminium plant.
In March 2014, Aluminiumwerk Unna AG became 100 years old. If that’s not a reason to celebrate! On September 12, we thank our suppliers, customers and other stakeholders. And of course, there will also be a celebration for our employees with family and friends. You can see our employee film on the 100th anniversary here.
